A divided market signal
U.S. stocks were described as edging lower as rising oil prices and mixed company earnings pressured Wall Street. The reported movements were small for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq but larger for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. [1]
One account put the S&P 500 at a loss of 13.59 points, or 0.2%, to 7,709.96; the Dow at a loss of 464.02 points, or 0.9%, to 53,885.10; and the Nasdaq composite at a loss of 15.09 points, or 0.1%, to 26,348.35. [1]

A separate account reported the S&P 500 up 0.1% near its record, the Nasdaq up 0.4%, and the Dow down 180 points. That conflicts with the reported declines from the other account, so the direction and size of the indexes' moves are not consistent across the records. [2]
Earnings widened the gaps between companies
The company results produced sharply different share-price reactions. Warner Bros. Discovery rose 1.7% after earnings exceeded investor expectations, while Molson Coors rose 1.3% after what was described as encouraging financial results. [1]
Honeywell Aerospace fell 23.2% after results fell well short of forecasts, and AppLovin fell 19.7% after reporting mixed results for its most recent quarter. The contrast shows that the session included substantial company-level dispersion even as the broad indexes moved only modestly in the available accounts. [1]
About 85% of S&P 500 companies had reported results, with overall earnings growth described as developing toward its strongest level since 2021. That assessment was qualified as a developing trend rather than a completed result. [1]
Oil, rates and unresolved policy questions
Brent crude was reported higher as uncertainty continued over the U.S. war with Iran and its effect on oil flows. The accounts differ on the increase: one reported a 3.8% rise to $82.49, while another reported a 2% rise. [1] [2]
The same trading-day records also said Treasury yields moved higher; one placed the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.67%, up from 4.63%. The Federal Reserve had held its benchmark interest rate steady amid concerns about inflation and the jobs market. [1]

Separately, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S.-Canada trade negotiations had become “nasty,” while the United States maintained tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and automobiles and the president threatened a 50% tariff on more Canadian goods beginning Aug. 19. The threatened measure was described as not yet implemented. [3]
The FCC had also launched an early review of eight ABC local broadcast licenses before their expiration dates. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr defended the agency's actions by saying broadcasters must operate in the public interest, while ABC accused the FCC of retaliation over political content. [4]
